This agreement is between [Owner name] (the "Owner") and the rider named in this form (the "Lessee").
- Lease. The Owner leases the horse named above to the Lessee for the dates and type chosen above, at [monthly lease fee] a month.
- Use. The Lessee rides only on the agreed days and for the uses listed above, and does not let anyone else ride without the Owner's written OK.
- Costs. The Lessee pays [share] of board, shoeing and routine vet care. The Owner pays [share]. Costs not listed are agreed in writing first.
- Vet care. Either party may call the vet in an emergency. The Owner is told right away and makes decisions about major treatment.
- Insurance. [Owner or Lessee] keeps mortality and major medical insurance on the horse during the lease.
- Risk. The Lessee understands riding and handling horses carries risk of injury, and rides at their own risk under the equine activity law of [state].
- Ending. Either party may end the lease with [number] days written notice. The horse stays at [barn name] unless both agree otherwise.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between a full lease and a half lease?
In a full lease the rider has the horse every day and usually pays most costs. In a half lease they share the horse and the costs with the owner or another rider.
What should a horse lease agreement include?
The horse, lease type and dates, riding days and uses, who pays for board, shoeing and vet care, insurance, risk and notice to end. It's a sample to start from, not legal advice.
Can a parent sign for a young rider?
Yes. There's a question for the parent's name, and the parent signs the agreement online.
