## Key points

- Cost per lead is ad spend divided by the number of leads it brought in.
- Average cost per lead was about $67 on Google search ads and $27 on Facebook lead campaigns in 2026, with wide gaps between industries.
- A good cost per lead is one your lead to customer rate can pay for, so work back from what a customer is worth.
- Cost per qualified lead is the safer target, because cheap leads that never buy make every sale more expensive.

Your ads bring in leads, but is the price right? This guide shows how to calculate cost per lead, what's good by channel and industry, and how to lower it without buying worse leads.

The form is where many leads are lost or won. The free [lead generation form template](https://reuily.com/templates/lead-generation-form) is short and marks every lead hot, warm or not a fit, so you can see your cost per qualified lead, not just per lead.

## What is cost per lead?

Cost per lead (CPL) is the average amount you pay to get one lead from a marketing campaign. It is your total spend on the campaign divided by the number of leads it produced. A lead is usually someone who submits a form, books a call or shares their contact details.

## Cost per lead formula

> Cost per lead = total spend ÷ number of leads

Use the same date range for both numbers, and decide whether spend includes only ads or also agency fees, tools and content. Either works, as long as you compare like with like.

### How to calculate cost per lead: an example

A dental practice spends $1,800 on Facebook ads in a month and gets 72 appointment requests.

$1,800 ÷ 72 = **$25 cost per lead**

Of those 72, 18 book and turn up for a first visit.

$1,800 ÷ 18 = **$100 cost per qualified lead**

That second number is the one to plan with. If a new patient is worth $900 in the first year, $100 is cheap.

## What is a good cost per lead?

A good cost per lead is one your sales can pay for. Work back from what a customer is worth:

> Highest affordable cost per lead = customer value × lead to customer rate × margin you're willing to spend on marketing

If a customer is worth $3,000, one lead in ten becomes a customer, and you are happy to spend a third of revenue to win them, you can afford up to $100 per lead ($3,000 × 0.1 × 0.33).

Benchmarks help you spot a campaign that is far off, but your own numbers set the target.

## Average cost per lead by channel and industry

LocaliQ's 2026 benchmarks, drawn from thousands of campaigns, are the most widely used reference:

| Channel | Average cost per lead | Average conversion rate | Lowest cost per lead | Highest cost per lead |
|---|---:|---:|---|---|
| Google search ads | $66.69 | 8.18% | Arts and entertainment, $26.84 | Attorneys and legal, $131.63 |
| Facebook lead campaigns | $27.39 | 8.54% | Careers and employment, $12.30 | Dentists, $61.56 |

Two things stand out. Search costs more per lead than social, because people searching are often further along.

And industry matters more than channel: a lawyer's search lead costs about five times an arts lead. See [LocaliQ's search benchmarks](https://localiq.com/blog/search-advertising-benchmarks/) and [Facebook benchmarks](https://localiq.com/blog/facebook-advertising-benchmarks/) for every industry.

## Cost per qualified lead: the number that matters

Cheap leads are only cheap if they buy. Compare two campaigns with the same budget:

| | Broad audience | Targeted audience |
|---|---:|---:|
| Spend | $3,000 | $3,000 |
| Leads | 150 | 60 |
| Cost per lead | $20 | $50 |
| Qualified leads | 15 | 24 |
| Cost per qualified lead | $200 | $125 |

The broad audience wins on cost per lead and loses on everything after it. Our guide to [lead quality](https://reuily.com/blog/how-to-improve-lead-quality) shows how to measure the difference by source.

## Cost per lead vs cost per acquisition vs CAC

| Metric | What it counts | Use it to judge |
|---|---|---|
| Cost per click (CPC) | Each click on your ad | The ad and its targeting |
| Cost per lead (CPL) | Each form fill or enquiry | The ad, landing page and form together |
| Cost per qualified lead | Each lead that meets your criteria | Whether leads are the right people |
| Cost per acquisition (CPA) | Each paying customer from a campaign | Whether the campaign makes money |
| Customer acquisition cost (CAC) | Each new customer across all marketing and sales | The whole business |

## Why is my cost per lead so high?

The usual causes, in the order worth checking:

1. **The landing page doesn't match the ad.** People click on one promise and land on a different one.
2. **The form is hard work.** Unclear questions, long dropdowns and fields that fight phone keyboards all lose leads.
3. **The audience is too broad.** You pay for clicks from people who were never going to enquire.
4. **The tracking is thin.** If the ad platform can't see which clicks became leads, it can't find more of them.
5. **The offer is weak.** "Contact us" asks for effort and gives little back. A quote, a consultation or a price guide gives a reason to fill in the form.

## How to lower cost per lead: 8 ways

### 1. Fix the form first

Your form converts the clicks you have already paid for. In a Google and University of Basel study, forms rewritten with clear labels, helpful errors and sensible grouping saw first-try submissions rise from about 30% to 73%.

### 2. Ask only what you will use

In HubSpot's analysis of 40,000 landing pages, adding a phone number field went with conversion falling from 19% to 13%. If you don't call leads, don't ask for a phone number.

### 3. See where people stop

Find the question where people give up, then reword it, make it optional or move it later. Form analytics that show drop-off by page tell you where to start.

### 4. Match the landing page to the ad

Use the ad's words in the headline, and send each ad group to a page about that one offer. Our guide to [landing page conversion rate](https://reuily.com/blog/landing-page-conversion-rate) covers this in detail.

### 5. Make it work on phones

In Unbounce's study of 41,000 landing pages, 83% of visits came from phones. Use the right keyboard for email and phone fields, big tap targets, and choices instead of typing where you can.

### 6. Track every lead, with the right event

Make sure every submission reaches the ad platform, from the page where people actually submit. A lead that isn't reported can't teach the algorithm anything.

### 7. Optimise for qualified leads, not all leads

Once you get steady volume, tell the platform which leads were good. Meta's tests found that optimising for quality leads cut the cost per quality lead by 15% on average.

### 8. Cut audiences and keywords that don't qualify

Check cost per qualified lead by ad set and keyword every month. Add negative keywords and exclusions for what brings volume without quality.

## How Reuily lowers your cost per qualified lead

Most of the advice above comes down to two things: losing fewer people on the form, and telling your ads which leads were worth paying for. Reuily handles both from the form itself.

1. **A form people finish.** **Drop-off by page** shows how many people leave on each page, so you fix the question that costs you leads.
2. **Your rules decide who qualifies.** In a **Lead form**, you tag answers as **Good fit** or **Not a fit**, and every response is scored as a **Hot lead**, **Warm lead** or **Not a fit**. The [lead generation template](https://reuily.com/templates/lead-generation-form) comes with budget and timing tagged.
3. **Accurate conversions for your ads.** Connect **Meta Pixel**, **Google Ads**, **Google Analytics 4** or **TikTok Pixel** on the form's **Integrations** page. Every lead counts as a conversion, and with **Mark hot leads as qualified** hot leads also send a qualified one.

Optimise campaigns for that qualified conversion once it fires steadily. The platform then spends your budget finding people who match your best leads, which is what brings cost per qualified lead down.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do you calculate cost per lead?

Divide what you spent on a campaign by the number of leads it brought in during the same period. If you spent $1,500 and got 60 leads, your cost per lead is $25. Use the same date range and the same definition of a lead for both numbers.

### What is a good cost per lead?

A good cost per lead is one you can afford given how many leads become customers and what a customer is worth. If one in ten leads buys and a customer is worth $2,000, any cost per lead well under $200 can be profitable.

### What is the average cost per lead for Facebook ads?

LocaliQ's 2026 benchmarks put the average cost per lead for Facebook lead campaigns at $27.39, from $12.30 for careers and employment to $61.56 for dentists. Your own number depends on your offer, audience and form.

### What is the average cost per lead on Google Ads?

LocaliQ's 2026 search benchmarks put the average cost per lead on Google Ads at $66.69, from $26.84 for arts and entertainment to $131.63 for attorneys and legal services.

### Why is my cost per lead so high?

The usual causes are a broad audience, ads that don't match the landing page, a slow or long form, and tracking that tells the ad platform little about which leads matter. Fixing the form and the tracking often lowers cost per lead faster than changing bids.

### What is the difference between cost per lead and cost per acquisition?

Cost per lead counts the cost of each person who fills in your form. Cost per acquisition counts the cost of each paying customer, so it is always higher. Cost per lead tells you how efficient your ads and form are; cost per acquisition tells you whether the campaign makes money.

### What is cost per qualified lead?

Cost per qualified lead is ad spend divided by the number of leads that meet your qualifying criteria. It shows what a useful lead really costs, and it often ranks campaigns differently from plain cost per lead.
