## Key points

- Lead quality is how likely a lead is to become a customer, judged on fit, need, timing and reach.
- Measure it with the share of leads that sales accepts, cost per qualified lead and lead to customer rate, not lead volume.
- Most quality problems start at the form, so ask one or two qualifying questions and score the answers as they arrive.
- Tell your ad platforms which leads were good, so they look for more people like them.

Your ads bring in leads, but sales says half of them are useless: students, competitors, budgets that don't fit. This guide shows how to measure lead quality and improve it, from the form to your ads.

Most of the work happens in the form. For a head start, the free [lead generation form template](https://reuily.com/templates/lead-generation-form) asks about budget and timing and marks every lead hot, warm or not a fit, so you see lead quality from the first response.

## What is lead quality?

Lead quality is how likely a lead is to become a paying customer. A high quality lead fits the customer you serve, has a need you can solve, can make or influence the decision, and wants to act soon. Low quality leads look the same in your inbox but rarely buy, so they cost sales time without adding revenue.

## What makes a high quality lead?

Most teams judge quality on four things:

- **Fit:** they are the kind of person or company you serve, in a place you serve.
- **Need:** they have the problem your product or service solves.
- **Timing:** they want to start soon, not "some day".
- **Reach:** they gave contact details that work and expect to hear from you.

A lead who meets all four is hot. A lead who meets some is warm and worth nurturing.

A lead who fails one hard rule, such as a location you can't serve, is not a fit, however good the other answers look.

## Lead quality vs quantity

More leads feel like progress, but they hide the real cost. If cheap leads rarely qualify, each qualified lead ends up costing more than one from a smaller, better campaign.

| | Campaign A | Campaign B |
|---|---:|---:|
| Ad spend | $2,000 | $2,000 |
| Leads | 100 | 40 |
| Cost per lead | $20 | $50 |
| Qualified leads | 10 | 16 |
| Cost per qualified lead | $200 | $125 |

Campaign A looks better on cost per lead. Campaign B wins on the number that pays the bills. Our guide to [cost per lead](https://reuily.com/blog/what-is-a-good-cost-per-lead) covers the sums in more detail.

## How to measure lead quality

Pick a few metrics and track them by source and campaign every month:

| Metric | What it tells you | How to work it out |
|---|---|---|
| Lead to qualified rate | Whether the right people fill in your form | Qualified leads ÷ all leads |
| Cost per qualified lead | What a useful lead really costs | Ad spend ÷ qualified leads |
| Sales accepted rate | Whether sales agrees with marketing | Leads sales accepts ÷ leads passed to sales |
| Lead to customer rate | Whether quality turns into revenue | New customers ÷ all leads |
| Time to close | How ready leads are when they arrive | Average days from lead to sale |

### Use a lead quality score

A lead quality score rates each lead from their answers, so you can compare sources without reading every reply. Points out of 100 are precise but hard to act on. Three levels are easier:

- **Hot:** call today.
- **Warm:** follow up and nurture.
- **Not a fit:** a polite reply, then close.

## How to improve lead quality: 9 ways

### 1. Write down what a qualified lead is

Agree on it with sales in one sentence per rule, such as "budget of $5,000 or more" or "starts within three months".

If marketing and sales define it differently, they will argue about every lead. Our guide to [qualified leads](https://reuily.com/blog/what-is-a-qualified-lead) has criteria and sample questions.

### 2. Ask one or two qualifying questions

Budget, timing and company size tell you more than a long list of contact fields. Ask only what you will use.

In HubSpot's analysis of 40,000 landing pages, conversion fell from 19% to 13% on forms that asked for a phone number, so every extra field should earn its place.

### 3. Score answers as they arrive

Scoring at the form means sales sees how good a lead is the moment it arrives, without reading every reply. Mark the answers that make someone promising, the answers that rule them out, and the questions nobody can skip a good answer to, such as budget.

### 4. Treat a work email as a signal

People who use a company address are usually further along than those using a personal one. Count it as a good sign, but don't require it if your buyers include freelancers or small businesses.

### 5. Give each level its own next step

Show hot leads a booking link and everyone else a friendly thank you, so your calendar fills with the people sales wants to talk to. People who fail a hard rule can finish early with a polite message.

### 6. Make the form easy for the right people

Hard forms lose good leads as well as bad ones. In a Google and University of Basel study, forms rewritten with 20 usability guidelines raised first-try submissions from about 30% to 73%.

Clear labels, helpful error messages and the right keyboard on phones all count.

### 7. Reply to hot leads fast

Speed changes quality. A Harvard Business Review study of more than a million leads found that companies replying within an hour were nearly seven times as likely to qualify the lead as those who waited longer.

Send hot leads to Slack or your CRM the moment they arrive.

### 8. Tell your ad platforms which leads were good

Ad platforms look for more people like those who convert. If every form fill counts the same, they find more form fillers.

Send a second event for qualified leads and they can find more people who qualify. The next section shows how.

### 9. Review your sources every month

Compare the lead to qualified rate by campaign, ad and keyword. Cut what brings volume without quality, and move budget to what brings hot leads. One bad audience can hide inside a good average.

## How to improve lead quality on Meta ads and Google Ads

Meta, Google and TikTok can all optimise for a deeper event than "lead". Meta's own tests found that advertisers who optimised for quality leads, with their CRM sending back which leads qualified, got a 15% lower cost per quality lead than those optimising for every lead.

To do the same:

1. Score leads on the form, so you know which ones qualify the moment they submit.
2. Send each platform a qualified lead event as well as the normal lead event.
3. Once the qualified event fires steadily, make it the campaign's optimisation goal.

> [!TIP]
> Ad platforms need volume to learn. TikTok recommends at least 50 events in 14 days before optimising for a deeper event, so start with the normal lead event and switch once qualified leads arrive steadily.

## How Reuily improves lead quality, from form to ad

Most form tools stop at the submission: every lead looks the same, and your ads only hear that someone filled in a form. Reuily scores each lead against your rules as it arrives, then passes that judgement on to sales and to your ads.

### 1. You decide what a qualified lead is

Make the form a **Lead form** and tag answers as **Good fit** or **Not a fit**. Mark a question **Must-have** when nobody can be hot without a good answer to it, use **How picky?** to set when someone counts as hot, and turn on **Work email is a good sign** if it fits your buyers. The [lead generation template](https://reuily.com/templates/lead-generation-form) comes with budget and timing already tagged.

### 2. Every response is scored as it arrives

Each lead lands as a **Hot lead**, **Warm lead** or **Not a fit**, with the answers that decided it. **Booking for hot leads only** shows your calendar to the right people, and hot leads can go straight to your CRM or a Slack channel.

### 3. Your ads get the conversion that matters

Connect **Meta Pixel**, **Google Ads**, **Google Analytics 4** or **TikTok Pixel** on the form's **Integrations** page and turn on **Mark hot leads as qualified**. Every lead sends a lead event, and hot leads also send a qualified one:

| Platform | Every lead | Hot leads also send |
|---|---|---|
| Meta | Lead | QualifiedLead |
| Google Ads | Lead conversion | Hot lead conversion |
| Google Analytics 4 | generate_lead | qualify_lead |
| TikTok | Lead | ApplicationApproval |

Because the qualified event follows your own rules, the platform optimises toward the leads your sales team wants, not every form fill. Events carry the form and the lead level, never answers. Our guide to [Meta pixel events](https://reuily.com/blog/meta-pixel-events) shows how to optimise for QualifiedLead.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is lead quality in marketing?

Lead quality is how well a lead matches the customer you want and how likely they are to buy. A high quality lead fits your offer, has a real need, can decide or influence the purchase and wants to act soon. Marketing teams judge it by what happens after the form, not by the number of form fills.

### How do you measure lead quality?

Track what share of leads sales accepts as qualified, the cost per qualified lead, the lead to customer rate, and the time it takes to close. Compare them by source and campaign. A simple lead quality score, such as hot, warm or not a fit, makes those comparisons quick.

### What is a lead quality score?

A lead quality score is a rating given to each lead from their answers and behaviour. Some teams use points out of 100. Others use levels such as hot, warm and not a fit, which are easier to act on, because each level has a clear next step.

### Is lead quality more important than lead quantity?

Usually, yes. Fifty leads that never reply cost more time than ten leads who book a call. Volume still matters, because every sales team needs enough leads to hit its target, so aim for the most qualified leads at a cost you can afford, not the most leads.

### How do I improve lead quality on Meta ads?

Ask a qualifying question on your form, then send Meta a second event for qualified leads and optimise your campaign for it once you have enough of them. Meta's own tests found that optimising for quality leads lowered the cost per quality lead compared with optimising for every lead.

### How do I improve lead quality on Google Ads?

Create a second conversion action for qualified leads, send it only when a lead qualifies, and use it as the primary goal once it has steady volume. Add negative keywords for searches that bring the wrong people, and make your ad say who the offer is for.
